Farmhouse-style homes on the market in Sonoma County

Farmhouse-style houses first appeared as rural homes throughout the Midwest in the 1800s, and they could be anything from smaller, simple homes to bigger family estates.

The earliest farmhouse homes were built by the farmers and families who needed to live in them, and the more standard look of two floors and semi-enclosed porch became popular in the 1900s thanks to the Sears, Roebuck and Co. catalog which sold all the pieces someone would need to build their own house.

Currently, building codes, zoning, and other ordinances along with construction know-how make it more of a project than a single person would want to take on. However, farmhouse-style homes are still being professionally built and continue to be popular with homebuyers.
